Low-mass black holes as the remnants of primordial black hole formation.

چکیده
Bridging the gap between the approximately ten solar mass 'stellar mass' black holes and the 'supermassive' black holes of millions to billions of solar masses are the elusive 'intermediate-mass' black holes. Their discovery is key to understanding whether supermassive black holes can grow from stellar-mass black holes or whether a more exotic process accelerated their growth soon after the Big Bang. Currently, tentative evidence suggests that the progenitors of supermassive black holes were formed as ∼10(4)-10(5) M(⊙) black holes via the direct collapse of gas. Ongoing searches for intermediate-mass black holes at galaxy centres will help shed light on this formation mechanism.

Formation and Evolution of Primordial Black Holes After Hybrid Inflation
We examine the formation and evolution of primordial black holes (PBH’s) after hybrid inflation. Our goal is to assess the effects of various theoretical uncertainties on the extrapolation from a given inflation model to a spectrum of primordial black hole masses. The context of our work is an examination of the possibility[1, 2] that the dark matter is comprised of Planck-mass black hole remna...
متن کاملForty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
متن کاملThe Role of Primordial Kicks on Black Hole Merger Rates
Primordial stars are likely to be very massive ≥ 30 M⊙, form in isolation, and will likely leave black holes as remnants in the centers of their host dark matter halos in the mass range 10 − 10 M⊙. Such early black holes, at redshifts z∼ 10, could be the seed black holes for the many supermassive black holes found in galaxies in the local universe. If they exist, their mergers with nearby super...
متن کاملThe faintest accretors
Recent X–ray observations have detected a class of very faint X–ray transients in the Galaxy which probably reveal a previously unrecognised type of accretion on to neutron stars or black holes. We show that these systems cannot have descended from binaries with stellar–mass components of normal composition. Accretion of hydrogen– depleted matter on to stellar–mass black holes can account for i...
متن کاملMicroscopic Black Holes as a Source of Ultrahigh Energy γ-rays
We investigate the idea that ultrahigh energy γ-rays (E > 10TeV) can be produced when charged particles are accelerated by microscopic black holes. We begin by showing that microscopic black holes may exist as remnants of primordial black holes or as products of the collisions in the large extra dimensions scenario of high energy cosmic rays with atmospheric particles. We then solve Maxwell’s e...
